How to Choose the Healthiest Water to Drink

Drinking plenty of water is one of the best things you can do for your health. Staying hydrated helps prevent headaches, keeps you energized, supports good digestion and healthy skin, and keeps your mental clarity sharp. But when it comes to the water you drink daily, quality matters too.

Below we’ll cover what you need to know (and what most people don’t consider, but need to) about choosing the healthiest water quality for your body.

5 Things to Know About the Healthiest Water Choices

For most of us, the most readily available type of water is tap water. We can access it straight from our sinks at any time and for any purpose. However, there are a number reasons to be careful about drinking tap water daily:

  • To kill harmful microorganisms and contaminants in tap water, it’s treated with a variety of chemicals.
  • A number of things can make their way into tap water, including medications like antidepressants, antibiotics, ACE inhibitors (heart drugs), hormones like oestradiol, and lead traces.
  • About 74% of U.S. water is fluoridated. Fluoride can accumulate in the body and, and in water it’s known to cause dental fluorosis, a tooth enamel defect.

With this in mind, you probably want to avoid many of the elements found in average tap water. Instead, it’s best to focus on healthier, cleaner forms of water as much as you can. Here’s what to look for.

Healthier Bottled Waters

Choosing a good bottled water can be a little tricky; there are so many to choose from! Many brands will include a picture of mountains or glaciers on the front for the appearance of freshness, but that doesn't always mean what’s inside is great.

One concern about bottled water is the plastic. Besides the environmental impact of the all the plastic, some research shows chemicals from the plastic may leach chemicals into the water as it sits in the bottle—and it gets worse the longer it’s in there.

Plus, some bottled water actually comes from filtered tap water. Look at the label for source and mineral content. It should be upfront about this. To choose brands that are actually from a better source and less likely to have contaminants, look for spring water, artesian water, or well water.

New Zealand water is one of the best choices because it comes from rivers, lakes, and waterfalls that remain virtually untouched by environmental contaminants like acid rain, pollution, and industrial waste.

Alkaline Water

Alkaline water has two big benefits:

  1. A pH between 7.5 and 10, which is typically higher than tap water and bottled water
  2. Rich in minerals including calcium, potassium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and silica

The minerals and electrolytes in most alkaline water are naturally present and give it a great taste. Look at the label or check out the brand’s website to learn more about where exactly they source their water. For example, Vita water sources theirs directly from a Sierra Mountains spring sourced from a vast mineral aquifer that naturally filters it.

Drinking alkaline pH water can help you hydrate after a workout, relieve acid reflux, and provide antioxidant benefits [1]. Plus, it’s full of natural minerals that are removed from overfiltering and chemical treatments in tap water or distilled water.

Water Filtered at Home

Another option for getting the healthiest water is to buy a home water filter. This can help get rid of dangerous toxins, fluoride, and water hardness.

The downside is that filters often remove beneficial trace minerals. However, it’s still a much better option than tap water and highly recommended for filtering water in your shower, bath, and drinking water at home.

Like with anything you consume, water quality matters. Use the tips above to find the healthiest water for you and your family—whether you’re at home or need to grab something hydrating on-the-go. Hopefully this gives you an idea of what to look for!
